The World of 1984: Could It Be Our Own? The frightening thing was that it might all be true. If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say of this or that event, IT NEVER HAPPENED--that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death? [sic] ââ¬âOrwell 72 Orwellââ¬â¢s novel, 1984, is well known to be a dystopia that perhaps is not so far out of reach of current society. Unlike most dystopias written today, it would take no major cataclysmic event to reach the world of Winston Smith and Big Brother, only a gradual decline into total governmental control and lack of free thought. The quote above demonstrates a very good example of the horrors of Winstonââ¬â¢s world. However, if one were to give the passage a more thorough train of thought, he or she may realize something even more unsettling. He or she may stumble upon the thought that says, ââ¬Å"Hey...doesnââ¬â¢t that already happen?â⬠Truly, it is very possible that Orwellââ¬â¢s dystopia is not an end-of-the-world scenario at all. Rather, Orwellââ¬â¢s 1984 may be the world of the present.
